Tijs et moi avons décidé de lancer un mini projet pour contribuer à notre manière à l’amélioration de la qualité de vie des étudiants soutenus par Ekari Foundation. Voici une petite explication et le moyen, si vous le souhaitez, d’y contribuer. Merci!

Tijs en ik hebben besloten een klein projectje op te starten om, op ons manier, ook bij te dragen aan het verbeteren van de levensomstandigheden van de studenten die Ekari ondersteunt. Hieronder, een korte uitleg en ook een manier voor jullie om bij te dragen als jullie dat wensen natuurlijk. Bedankt!

Context: Ekari Foundation, http://www.ekarifoundation.org, supports poor families from rural communities in Malawi, by paying the school fees of the students (from secondary school up to university).

43 students are currently able to pursuit their education thanks to the support of donors worldwide.

Now, the educational system in Malawi, more than being extremely expensive, is also disorganized and lacking space. Out of 10.000 students that pass the entry exam for university, only 1000 will manage to obtain a free spot. This means the others wait for 1, sometimes 2 years before being accepted in university. And some just stop waiting, put their dreams aside and start surviving however they can.

Outside of the already well established programmes Ekari is running, the NGO is currently looking for ways to fill that 1 or 2 year gap. We are now launching a computer training programme and are also doing some field research for a possible future internship programme.

But, in the meanwhile, students have a huge amount of spare time. Now, with no activities and no money in their pockets, lots of them are just waiting for the day to pass: sleeping, chatting, walking around, waiting to be able to pursuit their education.

During this ‘gap’ year as well as during summer holidays, students are free to come and live at Elias’ house, director of Ekari Foundation in Malawi.

The project: Books for Malawi.
Our ‘Books for Malawi’ project aims at offering a small library to Elias’ house with 50 to 100 books. These books need to be in English and secondary school level. Fiction, literature, biographies, history, philosophy.
But, no school books, they already have enough of biology, mathematics and other scholar books. These students are incredibly curious and eager to discover the world in any possible way.
Tijs & me will fund the bookcase and the first 2 books…

We zijn reeds aan het einde van missie in Malawi en we hebben het geluk gehad van een prachtige bibliotheek te kunnen schenken aan de Ekari-studenten, de avond voor ons vertrek uit Phalombe.

Er bevinden zich reeds 66 boeken in de bibliotheek, waarvan iets meer dan helft gloednieuwe boeken. Gecategoriseerd van makkelijk onderaan tot gevorderd bovenaan met iets uit alle genres: romans, thriller en liefdesverhalen, maar ook The Alchemist, Economics in Malawi, Roald Dahl, 100 African Heroes en veel meer, met een kleine typisch Belgische verrassing dat jullie samen met de andere foto’s kunnen ontdekken.

Er blijft nog wat budget over, dus gaan we hier in Lilongwe op zoek naar nog meer literatuur! 🙂
